“What do you mean, there are only eight?” Dušan’s deep tones came through the comm unit, his pale blue eyes fixated on mine through the screen. “We sent nine.”

“Well, only eight arrived on the transport,” I replied, doing my best to maintain a steady tone. “Your Second is here to confirm.” I pinched the digital screen with my fingers and twirled it on my desk toward Mad. His white-blond hair practically glowed beneath the fluorescent lighting of my office.

The Ash Wolf Alpha didn’t express any emotion as he confirmed my report. “Meira wasn’t part of the transport.”

“How is that possible?” Dušan demanded.

“You’ll need to check with Mihai. He was the last one seen with the cargo before we took off.”

“I thought I charged you with that task, Stefan?” Dušan phrased it as a question, but as a fellow leader, I heard the lethal note of disappointment in the way he spoke Mad’s given name.

How did one called Stefan take on the nickname of Mad? I wondered.

“I was working with Caspian in the cockpit, trying to help him with some of the more advanced controls. That was the primary reason you tasked me with this mission, correct? My previous flight experience?”

Elias arched a brow at me from across the room, my Second clearly catching the challenge in Mad’s voice. He would never use that tone with me in front of another sector leader. Maybe in private, sure, but not in this manner.

“I also expected you to manage the shipment,” Dušan replied after a beat. “Which clearly did not happen. Put Cain back on.”

I didn’t wait for Mad to touch my screen, reaching out to move it myself. The Shadowlands Sector Alpha ran his fingers through his long black hair, the tips brushing his shoulders. A scar ran up the side of his neck, starting at his collarbone. I wondered at the cause, as it didn’t resemble the usual wolf claw mark, but something more jagged. Sharper.

“You can hold back one of the cargos while I locate our missing Omega,” Dušan said, his jaw ticking with the words. “It won’t be hard. I should have her to you within the week.”

I considered him silently, debating whether or not to trust his word. The strain around his pale eyes told me accepting less of what he anticipated was going to create a problem on his side. It was already an issue on our part, as we’d sent the technology via transport two hours ago upon receiving word of the incoming shipment from Shadowlands Sector.

It’d been an execution of faith on behalf of both parties to exchange at the same time. “That’s going to require you to send back part of our shipment,” I noted out loud.

“A burden we will bear,” the other Alpha muttered as he leaned against a nearby tree. Just seeing his surroundings compared to mine said so much about our different situations.

Andorra Sector boasted power, technology, and advanced medicine whereas his wolves lived in the wilderness. Yet he had an abundance of Omega wolves, while we had barely any.
